Amethysts of Catherine the Great
Siberian amethysts were first mined in the Ural region around 1750. These stones were distinguished by their excellent quality, which is why both small and large specimens began to arrive at the Diamond Chamber for the Romanov collection.
Small stones were used to create exquisite masterpieces in the Rococo style, such as earrings, which were particularly favored by Empress Catherine.
